For the Greeblemonkey: August 2010 Greeblepix Contest

My entry for the August 2010 Greeblepix contest. Bass Harbor Light, Acadia National Park, Maine.

It's always inspiring to head out onto the rocks at sunset, as long as you've properly drenched yourself in bug repellent. Sometimes you're lucky and you get some color in the sky, sometimes you're not. Sometimes you've become a mosquito snack just for the fun of it. And other times you come back scraped and cut if you've found yourself out too far out on the rocks without a flashlight to guide your way back. I've managed to fall into all those categories. Multiple times.

There are some places we just keep being drawn to...

... and this little building is one of the many for me. This old place hasn't been farmed for quite a while and has fallen into a sad state of disrepair. The lady that did live in the old farm house is in a nursing home a few miles away, and the property has been turned over to the family. No one is taking care of it and it's such a sad thing to see when I drive by. If the walls of the home on this property could talk... the stories it could tell. A marriage of 50+ years. The raising of a family. Fighting and laughter. And hopefully, a lot of love.

I actually stopped here to shoot this photo today because when I walked into my mother's house, she was on the phone with the lady that used to live here. My mom calls her every day, and I shared quite a few holidays with her after her husband passed away. And it made me sad about what has become of her home.

Mending fences...

This week would have been good for a photography time-out...

... because sadly, these are the only two photos from Sunday through Friday that I liked (even a little!) out of the 365s! I didn't even bother to carry my camera with me during the week. I just rolled the dice at home and hoped that I had something, even out of focus, for the days photo!  I do feel better about Saturday's 365 though, but that's not included here =)

Mausoleum Peeping | Albany Rural Cemetery

What...? I can't be the only one who does it, can I? There are so many beautiful stained glassed windows in old mausoleums that you just don't see unless you look in the front door... and once you do, you often see little remembrances from the life of the person that was laid to rest there, safe within the mausoleum walls. The next time you're near an old cemetery, take the time to look inside. You might find old dried flowers, photos, small mementos of a life that has passed.

Farmland | Infrared

Not too long ago I shot this scene from a slightly different angle, and in color, for my 365 project. When I took that photo I knew that I wanted to come back and do an infrared shot of the scene. That said I didn't choose the best of weather days to take the photo. It was pretty overcast, and light came and went over the scene in waves. I decided to keep a tight composition just because there wasn't much to see in the sky. I chose black and white for the same reason.

I have a converted IR DLSR in my future. Not sure if it'll be done before the leaves are off the trees, but one can hope. I just need to get it done... in a timely fashion... which does seem to be a problem for me lately!

Since the Jets and Giants faced off tonight...

... I figured it was a good time to break out the Jets training camp photos from this past weekend. I admit it. I'm NOT a Jets fan. I'm a Giants fan... but it was fun to go and watch the Jets practice. I planted myself behind the end zone and just snapped away. A lot of animated players. Laughs on the field. Air guitar when least expected. A fun time. I share with you these photos from the day, with one or two more (not sure yet!) in the wings, maybe for tomorrow.

Some of my favorites from the day...

A night at a county fair

Friday night at a county fair... oh the sights you see. I spent a couple hours people-watching, and saw lots of sights that I wish I hadn't. Besides enjoying the walking sights, I did manage to eat my share of some of the unhealthiest fried food I could find. And I carried around a camera. That was really the main reason I went! There weren't a lot of things that caught my eye while I wandered around, and I really dislike the midway and being constantly yelled to by the carnies that work the games... so I found a spot that had no foot traffic and hung out for a while.

A rainy Sunday is perfect for bringing the 365 back to life

So much for thinking I was done with the 365 project. I got an earful about stopping it, so it lives. For now... Everyone is just stuck with boring photos throughout the week, and sometimes on the weekend, too!

Hanging it up...

I think that I'm putting this 365 to rest. I've lost the inspiration to move forward with it, and I don't want to keep going through the motions taking photos that stink just to have something for each day... And besides, no one will miss it, anyway =)
